On this date in 1970, Oregon Highway Division engineer George Thornton attempted to dispose of the rotting eight-ton carcass of a beached sperm whale at Florence, Oregon, with one-half ton of dynamite. The explosion threw chunks of rotting whale flesh over 800 ft away, one large chunk flattening the brand-new Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Regency that Walter Umenhofer had purchased during a Get a Whale of a Deal promotion at an Oldsmobile dealer in Eugene.
