On this date in 1971, Mariner 9 was inserted into Mars orbit, becoming the first spacecraft to orbit another planet. The first photograph is a reprocessed Mariner 9 image of Olympus Mons, a shield volcano on Mars 374 miles in diameter (approximately the same size as the state of Arizona), 16 miles high, and rimmed by a 4 mile high scarp.
