On this date in 1978 the Jonestown murder-suicide occurred in Guyana, taking the lives of a total of 918 people. The Peoples Temple had started out as a left-wing activist movement as early as the 1950s in Indiana, and became powerful in California Democratic politics in the early 1970s. Facing criticism, and looking to build a socialist community in a friendly country--Guyana is largely black, as were the members of the Temple--they moved to Jonestown in the mid-70s. Jim Jones apparently got weirder and weirder and then the murder-suicide happened. I remember watching the news on TV at the time; it was very shocking. I was 13. My folks never shielded us from finding out what was going on in the world; we always watched the news, from when I was very young.
