On this date in 1982... ...Argentinian forces comprised of amphibious commandos and marines landed at Moody Brook barracks on the Falkland Islands while a second landing occurred at Yorke Bay with amphibious armoured personnel carriers. The Argentine mission was to converge on Government House in the town of Stanley and order the surrender of British Marines and the Governor Rex Hunt. The first shots at Government House were fired at 06h30. By 09h30, the British, outnumbered by several to one, surrendered. In London, the news was received with shock. The Foreign Secretary, Lord Carrington, resigned. The following day, the UN Security Council passed Resolution 502 condemning Argentinas invasion of the Falklands and requesting a diplomatic solution be found via negotiations between Argentina and the UK. However, the Iron Lady herself, Margaret Thatcher, would not take this offence lightly. She responded with a naval task force intent on retaking the Falklands: consisting of 43 Royal Navy ships (including 2 aircraft carriers), 22 Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships and 62 merchant ships. The Empire was ready to strike back.
