On this date in 2004 – the day we remember for the death of John Lennon, another senseless rock-n-roll murder took place. “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott (not as well known as Lennon, perhaps) had established himself as one of metal’s all-time greatest guitar heroes, thanks to his distinctive, instantly recognizable rhythm guitar tone and absolutely blistering lead guitar technique, that he created as a member of Pantera (that was started back in 1981). After an acrimonious dissolution of the group in 2003, the Abbott brothers unveiled a new group, Damageplan. They were touring the country in the late Fall of 2004, when the quartet appeared at the Alrosa Villa Club in Columbus Ohio — where an unimaginable tragedy awaited. During the first 10 seconds of Dimebag’s first set, a former U.S. Marine (Nathan Gale) stormed onto the stage, firing point-blank into the guitarist’s head. Five people, including the shooter, died. Gale’s motives remain unclear to this day. Some witnesses said he shouted, “You broke up Pantera.”
