On this date in 2007, a life changing event occurred. I was heading up to Oakland for the Raiders-Denver game with my comp Charlie Antonio. I wasnt feeling to good and had a cold but nothing was going to stop me from going to the game. As the day progressed I began to feel worse. I was having this tightness in my chest and it was difficult to breathe. Charlie kept asking if I was alright and I was telling him Im ok just feeling the affects from the cold I had. The pain intensified with each step and it got harder to breathe. We finally got in but we didnt make it to our seats. I could go no further and sat down in the closest seat I could find. Fortunately the seat would be vacant that game. I watched the entire game but with reservation for everytime I would raise up to cheer the pain in my chest intensified. Despite Charlies insistance that we should leave I told him no lets finish the game plus the Raiders were beating Denver and victories were scarce that year. The game ended and it took us even longer to get back to the car for I could only walk a few steps without losing my breath. The pain in my chest was so intense. I made it home and was still feeling terrible. My cold had now turned into bronchitis and I was really laboring to breathe. The only time I felt a little better was when I would have coughing spells. I did not go to the doctor until the following Friday when I could not breathe very well, taking short gasps of breath. My face was swollen as were my hands and legs. My daughter in law Anita A Salazar drove me to the ER. I could barely walk or talk. When the triage nurse saw me she called for a doctor immediately. Before I knew it my shirt was cut off and blood was being drawn, wires were attached to my body and and oxygen mask was placed over my face. Everyone was working pretty quickly and the doctor repeatedly kept asking me how I was feeling. After a few hours I was told by the doctor that I was in congestive heart failure. That night was the first of 45 days that I would spend in the cardiac unit. A heart cath was done and revealed that I had not one heart attack but three. My cardioligist told me the cold I had and the coughing I did probably saved my life since everytime I coughed it would make my heart pump. Im so thankful that God felt it was not my time and that HE felt I still have some work I could do for him. My cardioligist calls me his miracle patient everytime I see him and I always reply Thank you Jesus.
