On this date in 2008: Carlos Ruiz hits what to date is the only walkoff infield single in World Series history, scoring Eric Bruntlett to give the Phillies a 5-4 win in Game 3 and a 2-1 lead in the series. Back-to-back homers by Chase Utley and Ryan Howard gave the Phils a 4-1 lead in the sixth (Ruiz had homered in the second, Utley opened the scoring with a groundout RBI in the first), but Tampa Bay scored two in the seventh (aided by a blown call when Carl Crawford was incorrectly called safe at first on a bunt where Jamie Moyer made a diving flip to Howard) and one in the eighth to tie it. J.C. Romero settled things down by retiring all four batters he faced over the eighth and ninth. Bruntlett was hit by a pitch to start the home ninth, then advanced to third after a wild pitch and overthrow to second by Rays catcher Dioner Navarro. Shane Victorino and Greg Dobbs were then intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs before Ruiz hit a little dribbler up the third base line that Evan Longoria fielded, but his off-balance toss home sailed over Navarros head, allowing Bruntlett to slide across with the winning run
