On this date in 72, I came home for the weekend from ETSU. Like alwasy I went straight to the station to work before going home around 7p. When I approached the Shell station I notice something didnt look right. It seems the day before a lady in a little Italian sports car pulled in wanting a fill up. My grandfather went out to wait on her and as he was pumping the gas, this lady started the engine and it caught on fire. My grandfather started to run and this lady got out of her car and past my grandfather and some employees and never looked back. Matter of fact, we never saw her again for her insurance company dealt with it. Dallas FD put the fire out, but not before it destroyed the front canaopy, 3 pumps, and her car. This happened about 4pm and Shell had a crew out there and got temp lights on the canopy, got the damage pumps running again so we could stay open til midnight. Dad closed at 6p and did so for the next week cause a flashlight with a bad battery put out more light than the temp ones did.
