On this date in computing history, Apple released the Macintosh. The date was January 24, 1984. Two days earlier, Apple had teased the Macintosh in a futuristic commercial directed by Ridley Scott that aired during Super Bowl XVIII (Redskins-Raiders). The commercial proclaimed, “On January 24th, Apple Computer will introduce Macintosh. And you’ll see why 1984 won’t be like ‘1984,’” a reference to the George Orwell novel of the same name, which was published in 1949. The 60-second spot is still heralded as one of the greatest Super Bowl ads of all time. And it’s said that the Macintosh changed computing forever, with its graphical user interface and its ability to be controlled by a mouse. (The mouse was actually invented in the 1960s, but it remained relatively obscure until 1984.) Apple said the Mac was “the computer for the rest of us.” What do you think? Did the Mac change your life 30 years ago? What computing products change your life today? cnettv.cnet/1984-apple-commercial/9742-1_53-15243.html
