On this date in the history of human beings (and desolation angels driven off the road), in 1774, colonists in Taunton, Massachusetts raised a flag with the word Liberty written on it. The first such flag raised in the colonies to express defiance towards British rule. In 1816, the Penang Free School was founded in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. The school is the oldest English-language school in southeast Asia. In 1973, LA Rams defensive end Fred Dryer became the first NFL player to score 2 safeties in a single game. The plays were made on two consecutive drives in the fourth quarter, and the Rams won 24-7. Finally, in 1969, novelist/poet/American icon Jack Kerouac died at the age of 47 from an internal hemorrhage caused by cirrhosis of the liver.
