On this day 102 years ago-November 5, 1912-Governor Woodrow Wilson (pictured), Democrat of New Jersey, was elected to his first term as President of the United States, defeating Republican incumbent President William Howard Taft and Progressive (Bull Moose) party candidate and former President Theodore Roosevelt. Wilson was re-elected in 1916. On August 25, 1916, President Wilson signed legislation creating the National Park Service, the agency that now administers James A. Garfield NHS. World War I dominated Wilsons second term as President. During that conflict, he appointed Harry A. Garfield, eldest son of President and Mrs. James A. Garfield, as head of the Federal Fuel Administration. That agency was created to ensure adequate supplies and reasonable prices of coal and other fuels for the war effort and for the American populace.
