On this day, 108 years ago, Voorhees College Founder Elizabeth Evelyn Wright Menafee was buried on the campus of Voorhees College. J. Kenneth Morris describes her funeral in the book ELIZABETH EVELYN WRIGHT 1872-1906: FOUNDER OF VOORHEES COLLEGE. “The body was shipped to Denmark with burial on the school campus. The funeral was held on Tuesday, December 18, a fair, cold, and windy day, conducted by the Rev. Edgar James Penney, A. M., a Congregational minister, chaplain of Tuskegee Institute and dean of the Phelps Hall Bible School at Tuskegee. He had known Elizabeth when she was a student. Following a service in the school chapel, the entire student body, faculty and a large number of parents and friends walked in solemn procession behind the casket, across the campus to a knoll near the northeast boundary where the interment was held. As the grave was being filled by several teachers and students, the entire assembly sang a spiritual loved by Elizabeth, whose beautiful soprano voice had often led it in chapel.” (We are climbing Jacob’s ladder)
