On this day 12 years ago, a hush was heard not just across this land but across the world! The unthinkable had happened! American had suffered a deep wound. Like superficially jealous younger siblings most of the world took pause at the thought, and while they may casually speak against us in the good times, the thought of our being attacked from inside hurt a deeper part of their hearts! I had some friends who were vacationing in Italy at the time of the attack and the local people would approach them with genuine tears of sorrow and words of comfort. America, the super-power, the one who needs no one, the one everyone looked to for help had sustained a blow that was unthinkable! While the world had become accustomed to the external facade painted by a government that daily grows to a place of not representing the people, it now was seeing the stunned heart of genuine and good people. The powerful big brother stood emotionally naked before the world. For just a few weeks the games stopped, sobriety resided in the minds of all, and the politicians stood on steps in Washington and sang God Bless America. What I pray we never forget is the unity that came as a result of that day. A short lived camaraderie that felt so right! Our responsible role is not to forget the day of 9-11-01, but rather not to forget "who" we are as a people. At the core of the "American" heart is a cry for freedom and justice, a cry that is being replaced by a cry for abdication of authority and responsibility. What happened 12 years ago was tragic, but the fact that it only awakened the sleeping giant for a few weeks is much more tragic! We are a good people, we are a strong people, what resides in us is great potential. But, we have become a lazy people who want a few to pay the price for many, and who have abdicated our responsibility to those who have not our best interest at heart. On this day as the heart cry is "never forget" I pray we remember who we are and whose we are!!! May God Bless America with an awakening of perspective so she may be the lighthouse to the world she has the potential to be!!
