On this day: 19 January 1839, the Post Impressionist Catholic artist Paul Cézanne was born in Aix-en-Provence, France. His work is said to have bridged the divide between late 19th century Impressionism and the early 20th century Cubism and heavily influenced artists such as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. Cézanne began to study painting and drawing at the École des Beaux-Arts in Aix in 1856. In 1861 he went to Paris, drawing inspiration from visits to the Louvre— studying Diego Velázquez and Caravaggio in particular. Cézannes work in the 1860s was often macabre and included fantasies, dreams and religious images. From the 1870s, Cézanne became convinced that one must paint directly from nature and the romantic and religious subjects began to disappear from his works and fresher, more vibrant colours emerged. Although religious images appeared less frequently in Cézannes later work, he remained a devout Catholic and said, When I judge art, I take my painting and put it next to a God-made object like a tree or flower. If it clashes, it is not art.
