On this day. . .1988- At 0134 hrs. the members of D Platoon “hit the street” for reported heavy smoke in the area of Seventeenth and Walnut Streets. Traveling the short two blocks from Station 2, the BC found heavy smoke oozing from the third floor and roof eaves of No. 77 N. Seventeenth St. This house was in a long row of three story brick houses. Careless smoking ignited a mattress in the third floor rear bedroom of No. 77. The room was gutted with heat and smoke damage to the third floor. Fire extended into the loft with roof and third floor opened up and minor fire damage incurred to No. 75. Water damage was incurred to the first and second floors. The fire was under control at 0230 and the companies stayed on the scene two hours. Overall loss was $8,000 and two lines were pulled. Six occupants were displaced. D Platoon, second alarm.
