On this day, 41 years ago, Gladys Knight & The Pips started a 4-week run at #1 on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles with their hit single “Midnight Train to Georgia” from the album “Imagination” (the group’s first album on the Buddah record label after leaving Motown). The song also spent 2 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and won the 1974 Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance By A Duo, Group or Chorus. Midnight Train to Georgia was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
