On this day 50 years ago @chesterfc gave @manutd a run for their money in the #FACup. Manchester United 2 Chester FC 1. Ronald Crowther (Daily Mail) It took the world class best of Bobby Charlton and a goal with an offside look about it to tip the scales between the cup favourite and their gallant Fourth Divsion opponents. Every man in Chesters well drilled defence believed George Best was offside when he streaked after Charltons pass... And but for Charltons midfield mastery and this belated breakthrough cheeky Chester might have shattered all the odds. The Daily Telegraph Chester can take credit for making this a memorable cup game. Not only did they hold the favourites for more than half of the tence struggle but seemed to have the attacking potential to snatch an equaliser after Manchester United had virtually seeled the issue... it was fitting that Chester should keep the result open right to the end with some fine goalkeeping by Reeves. His remarkable anticipation denied Charlton, Herd and Best what seemed certain goals. Ian Hargreaves (Liverpool Daily Post) No Royalist garrison ever defended the honour of Chester against overwhelming odds than did the eleven members of the Citys football team on Saturday faced by the awe inspiring ranks of Manchester United, they refused to concede an inch and in the end were defeated only after a titanic struggle. Brian Crowther (The Guardian) Chester gave United a lot of trouble... because their attack presented some unaccustomed problems. How often does one see a First Division forward attempt to score with a diving header? How often does one see one try his luck with a drive from the wing? Chester did these things ane more with assurance. After Saturday the Fourth Division no longer seems to be their habitat. Bob Russell (Daily Mirror) This ranked as the finest Cup performance if not the most sensational result of the day. Kenneth Waite (Sunday Express) For 45 glorious nerve tingling minutes 5000-1 shot Chester looked set to write their name into FA Cup history by knocking out Manchester United the 13-2 favourites. How close they came to doing it is a story that should make the little Fourth Division outfit no less proud than if they had won. Peter Slingsby (Sunday Mirror) Two players dominated this rousing, so typical FA Cup thriller - Chesters goalkeeper hero Dennis Reeves and Bobby Charlton, the one United forward to live up to his reputation in this david and Goliath clash. Reeves was magnificent. Nothing less. So was Charlton whose vintage scheming show virtually put United into tomorrows fourth round draw.
