On this day AATW joins people in the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan in marking Commemoration Day, a relatively new occasion that recalls the violent, ethnically-inspired clashes in June 2010 that ended the government of Kurmanbek Bakivev. There are a lot of public holidays on the Kyrgyz calendar that refer to the nations recent past, some of which are left over from the Soviet era, such as Fatherland Defenders Day (February 23) that notes the formation of the Red Army in 1918, the May 9th Great Patriotic War Against Fascism Day and the November 7 Day of the Great October Socialist Revolution, which Kyrgyzstan has now transformed into the Day of Reconciliation and Agreement that celebrates the Kyrgyz people. AATW commemorates Kyrgyzstan by retelling the epic tale of the legendary unifier of the Kyrgyz peoples . . . Manas. (YAY!). A substantial statue of Manas now stands in Ala Too Square in the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek, in a spot once occupied by a massive Soviet-era statue of Lenin.
