On this day, December 6, 1991, Serbian-Montenegrin forces began The St. Nicholas Day Bombings during their siege of Dubrovnik, Croatia. Dubrovnik had been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, so Croatian civilians had thought the town safe from the Balkan Wars and Genocide.
