On this day, December 6, 1991, Serbian-Montenegrin forces began The St. Nicholas Day Bombings during their siege of Dubrovnik, Croatia. Dubrovnik had been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, so Croatian civilians had thought the town safe from the Balkan Wars and Genocide. Which is exactly what made the town attractive to the Serbian and Montenegrin military. The town was pummeled with by 82mm rockets and 120mm mortars continued for twelve hours. https://youtube/watch?v=sU0JPXUmg44&noredirect=1 For these war crimes, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) convicted three JNA Navy officers and handed over a fourth to Serbia for prosecution.
