On this day, July 9th, in 1868 the 14th amendment to the constitution was adopted. As one of the three Reconstruction Amendments. The amendment addresses citizenship rights and equal protection of the laws, and was proposed in response to issues related to former slaves following the American Civil War. On July 28th of the same year the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified. The amendment had been rejected by most Southern states but was ratified by the required three-fourths of the states. It forbids any state to deny any person "life, liberty or property, without due process of law" or to "deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." This clause was the basis for Brown v. Board of Education (1954), the Supreme Court decision that precipitated the dismantling of racial segregation, and for many other decisions rejecting irrational or unnecessary discrimination against people belonging to various groups. On this historic day, Arkansas Initiative for Marriage Equality will submit its ballot measure to the Attorney General for approval.
