On this day, October 15th 1916, my mother was born. Freda Jane Phillips Bishop, the only child of Carlos Joseph Phillips and Lilly Adeline Rigney Phillips. Lilly experienced gestational diabetes which would cause later miscarriages. Carlos suffered from a rib which began to grow toward his lung and would cause death at a young age. Mom was 6 when he died. Today both conditions would have simple medical remedies. In the 1920s they were out of reach of country folks. At 16 she was staying with her aunt Lizzey (Elizabeth) Rigney whose husband had a broken back from a mining accident. The house overlooked the mile long hollow where daddy lived. Jesse Lee Bishop was a stropping farm boy at 6 2. They married when mom was 18 and he 24. Eight children, dozens of grandchildren and great grandchildren would be born. Happy birthday Mom.
