On this day Saturday 10th September 1977. John Middleton made his final appearance for Nottingham Forest in a 3-2 away win over Wolverhampton The Dingle Wanderers at Molinuex. The young keeper, an England under 21 international thought to be bound for full international honours, was criticised after the game by Brian Clough for conceding a total of 5 goals in his last two games. Things never worked out for Middleton and injury forced his premature retirement in 1980.
