On this day in 1713, the War of the Spanish Succession ended with the signing of the Treaty of Utrecht, with France ceding Newfoundland and Gibraltar to Britain. Nobody expected the War of the Spanish Succession. And in 1945, Allied troops liberated the Nazi concentration camp of Buchenwald, north of Weiner, Germany. Furthermore, in 1951, US General Douglas MacArthur was relieved of his command in Korea, after a disagreement with President Harry Truman. Finally, in 1968, one week after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., the Civil Rights Act of 1968 was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson.
