On this day in 1714, at the age of 54, Britains new monarch, King George I, arrived in England to take power. He was a German protestant. He wasnt English in any way, shape or form, but a peculiar Reformation era law required that the king of England be a protestant, and all the real Englishmen in line for the throne ahead of him happened to be Roman Catholic, so they were automatically disqualified. The crown passed over more than FIFTY English claimants in order to get to him, a German, just because those FIFTY real Englishmen in line for the throne were Catholic. I suppose, in a way, it all worked out. If George I hadnt been king, then George III wouldnt have been king either, and then the American colonies might not have been pressured into seeking our independence. But George III sure was a net drag on England, and he was only king because his grandfather was the first protestant relative in a huge royal family of Catholics. So very odd. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_I_of_Great_Britain
