On this day in 1756, John Trumbull was born in Lebanon, Conn., to Gov. Jonathan Trumbull and Faith Robinson. While young John would serve as aide-de-camp to Gen. George Washington, it would not be in that capacity that he would make a name for himself. John Trumbull is now known as “Painter of the American Revolution.” He recorded scenes of military life and events during the war, in his Romantic style, capturing such moments of gravity as “The Battle of Bunker Hill” and “Death of General Montgomery at Quebec,” memorializing what progress the Continental Army could make against the British and Hessian troops in the colonies’ campaign to shake free of British rule. His niece married Daniel Wadsworth, who founded the Wadsworth Athenaeum Museum of Art – which still has some of Trumbull’s paintings and correspondence in its permanent collection. (The Yale Art Gallery has more of Trumbull’s original works on permanent display.)
