On this day in 1780, the Siege of Charleston ended with Major General Benjamin Lincoln surrendering to Lieutenant General Sir Henry Clinton of the British forces. This defeat was a major blow to American forces and caused the elimination of the Continental Army in the South. This is considered the 3rd largest surrender of the U.S. Army following the Fall of Bataan (1942) and the Battle of Harpers Ferry (1862.) Following the surrender, Lord Charles Cornwallis marched with his 2,500 troops to Camden where they organized the leading supply site for the Southern Campaign. Lord Cornwallis made his headquarters in the Joseph Kershaw mansion. The first image is the remains of horn work from the Siege of Charleston in todays Marion Square in downtown Charleston.
