On this day in 1783, Black soldier Oliver Cromwell would be awarded the Badge of Merit for his valiant military service by then-General George Washington. Unfortunately, he wouldnt get to keep it. NewsOne reports: Several years later, he applied for a military pension but was denied due he not being able to read or write. His badge was also taken away from him. Because of his standing in the Burlington community in New Jersey, he was aided by lawyers, judges and politicians. Eventually, he would receive a pension for his services, although it isnt mentioned whether he ever received his badge back. newsone/3015828/oliver-cromwell-black-soldier/
