On this day in 1816, William Marsh Rice was born in Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1838, he moved to the upstart town of Houston and made his fortune there as a merchant. He left the bulk of his estate to the founding of an institute of higher education in Houston. Opening in 1912 as William Marsh Rice Institute for the Advancement of Letters, Science, and Art, it is known today as Rice University.
