On this day, in 1849, Elizabeth Blackwell became the FIRST woman to graduate with a medical degree in the United States. When she was admitted into the Geneva Medical College in 1847, it created an uproar. Fellow students and the general public criticized her for going into medicine. Despite their criticism, she graduated, and established a private practice and a clinic for the poor, then in 1857, opened the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children with her sister, also an MD. In the late 1860s she created a medical school for women and a student of hers would later open a medical school for women in London. She later returned to England to practice and lecture until her death in 1910.
