On this day in 1859, the West Briton reported: “For sale for £4 – (cost £8 when new), an American Ball Washing Machine complete, the property of a gentleman. It is thorough good condition, and has been used for a year & a half with complete success. From a change of residence, and in consequence of his washerwoman, who is vigorously and resolutely opposed to the machine because it dispenses with a great deal of manual labour, the gentleman is reluctantly compelled to offer it at half price.” You go girl!
