On this day in 1862, August Heller died in Rockingham County, Va., fighting for the Union during the Battle of Cross Keys. The Confederate Army, under Maj. Gen. Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson, had forced Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks out of the Shenandoah and was threatening Washington. Federal troops advanced and Jackson began a retreat, leaving Maj. Gen. Richard S. Elwell at Cross Keys. In one advance, August was hit in the arm, and was then hit again and killed. He was first buried at Cross Keys, and may have later been removed to the National Cemetery at Fredericksburg, VA. Cross Keys was considered a Confederate victory.
