On this day in 1894, Georgia-born jockey Willie Simms won the 28th running of the Belmont Stakes held at New Yorks Morris Park Racecourse. Riding atop racehorse Henry of Navarre, Simms finished the 1 1/8 mile race in a time of 1:56, defeating runner-up jockey Fred Littlefield (Prig) by well over two lengths. Born in Augusta, Georgia, Simms would go on to win the Kentucky Derby (1896 & 1898) and the Preakness (1898) and was inducted into the National Museum of Racings Hall of Fame in 1977.
