On this day in 1902, Theodore was attempting to arrange the details of what would become a very famous hunting trip. The bear hunt was arranged for him by Stuyvesant Fish, the President of the Illinois Central Railroad. Theodore felt that he both needed and deserved a vacation, and he asked Fish to keep his plans a secret. If the press found out, it would be impossible for him to have a successful (and relaxing) trip. This letter was written to John Avery McIlhenny, who was a member of Theodore’s Rough Riders regiment during the Spanish American War, and who would also attend the bear hunt. If the name McIlhenny sounds familiar, it’s because John Avery was the son of the creator of Tobasco brand hot sauce, which is still produced on Avery Island, Louisiana today. The press ultimately did find out about the hunting trip, and cartoonist Clifford Berryman drew the now-famous teddy bear cartoon that generated the legend of the teddy bear.
