On this day in 1932 the federal government used troops against troops. when it ordered the army to forcefully evict WW One vets from their encampment in Washington, DC, where thousands had occupied DC demanding payment of their bonus for serving in the war. Payment was not due until 1945, but many of the vets were desperate for the cash payment in the midst of the Great Depression. John diJoseph, a wire service photographer, described the camps on fire. "The sky was red. You could see the blaze all over Washington." Even in 1932, Congress failed to act and screwed veterans. The images went out all over the country; people watched the newsreels at movie houses and saw the tanks in the street, the tear gas, and MacArthur driving out the troops. President Hoover is alleged to have remarked that the images would cost him the Nov. election. youtube/watch?v=xu9FxiHp8ss
