On this day in 1940, Atlantas Ponce de Leon Park hosted a highly publicized exhibition boxing match between former heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey and professional wrestler Clarence Cowboy Luttrell. In the bout, witnessed by over 12,000 fans, the 45-year-old Dempsey knocked down Luttrell four times in the first round and won the match after a left hook in the second round knocked the wrestler unconscious and out of the ring. The home of the Atlanta Crackers baseball team for nearly six decades (1907-65), Ponce de Leon Park hosted many sporting events throughout its existence including horse races, local high school football games, and Georgia and Georgia Tech baseball and football games.
