On this day in 1953, one of the most destructive and devastating tornadoes in US history hit the Flint area. The tornado was classified as an F5, with wind speeds topping 260 mph. The same thunderstorm produced another tornado rated an F4, which traveled roughly from Yale to Lakeport, with relatively minor damage (mostly rural farmland). 1953 also featured an F5 tornado which traveled from Smiths Creek through south Port Huron into Ontario, destroying over 400 homes in St. Clair County.
