On this day in 1956, Louis Louie Armstrong performed for the first time on The Ed Sullivan Show. Widely considered one of the most important musical artists of the 20th century, Armstrong played a vital role in bringing jazz into the American mainstream. Whether playing in small combos or big bands, Armstrong exuded the hot New Orleans style of jazz he rose up in. Known for his jovial disposition, his virtuoso trumpet playing, and his raspy, instantly recognizable singing voice, he was arguably the first African-American jazz musician to have cross over appeal. He was a prolific recording artist and appeared in many movies, most notably in Hello Dolly with Barbara Streisand. Armstrong also performed on numerous television shows during the 1950s and 60s, including 15 appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show.
