On this day in 1966, one of the greatest comedians in the history of show business made her Ed Sullivan debut: Joan Rivers. After seeing Rivers appear on the Johnny Carson Show, Ed Sullivan quickly booked her for his own program. Appearing in between jazz singer Maria Cole and operatic baritone Robert Merrill, Joan Rivers performed her unique brand of self-depracating humor about beauty and age. She would eventually go on to make over 20 more appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show, launching the career of one of the most influential women in comedy history.
