On this day in 1969, the New York City Marble Cemetery was designated a New York City landmark. Located on East Second Street between First and Second Avenue, it was opened in 1832 as the second non-sectarian burial ground in the city. The cemetery derives its name from the original family vaults, which were made from Tuckahoe marble. Many prominent New Yorkers are buried here including one-time mayor and Governor Stephen Allen. For a time, the cemetery was even the resting place of President James Monroe, although his remains were eventually moved to Virginia in 1858. The Marble Cemetery is one of New York City’s hidden jewels. Surrounded on three sides by rows of tenements and houses, the cemetery can only be accessed from East Second Street.
