On this day in 1983, Men At Work started a four week run at No.1 in the US singles chart with Down Under the Australian act groups second US No.1, also a No.1 in the UK. The Land Down Under is Australia, where the group is from. The lyrics were written by lead singer Colin Hay, who told us: The chorus is really about the selling of Australia in many ways, the over-development of the country. It was a song about the loss of spirit in that country. Its really about the plundering of the country by greedy people. It is ultimately about celebrating the country, but not in a nationalistic way and not in a flag-waving sense. Its really more than that. https://youtube/watch?v=XfR9iY5y94s
