On this day in 1991, following the expiration of a United Nations - TopicsExpress

On this day in 1991, following the expiration of a United Nations deadline for Iraqs withdrawal from Kuwait, aircraft from a U.S.-led coalition began striking targets in and around Baghdad, marking the start of Operation Desert Storm. Among the new technology used in Desert Storm was the E-8 aircraft known as Joint STARS. The high-powered synthetic aperture radar used on the aircraft had its origins in DARPAs Pave Mover program, which began in 1978. The radar enabled the coalition to pinpoint thousands of Iraqi vehicles, and provided a real-time tactical view of the battlefield never before seen in the history of warfare. (U.S. Air Force photos)
