On this day in 1998, Maryland-based Radio One purchases Bell Broadcasting for $34.2 million. Bell Broadcasting, founded by Dr. Wendell Cox and Dr. Haley Bell, had own radio stations AM 1200 WCHB and 105.9 kiss-fm since 1956 and 1960, respectively. The men held the distinction of being the first blacks in Michigan history to own a radio station. Cathy Hughes is founder of Radio One. #On This Day: African American Life in Detroit
