On this day in 2000, Georgia native Shareef Abdur-Rahim and the U.S. mens basketball team won the gold medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Having already defeated Russia, 85-70, in the quarterfinals and Lithuania, 85-83, in the semifinals, the U.S. mens basketball team held on to defeat France, 85-75, in the gold medal game played at the Sydney SuperDome. Born in Marietta, Georgia, Abdur-Rahim spent twelve seasons in the NBA with the Vancouver Grizzlies (1996-2001), Atlanta Hawks (2001-04), Portland Trailblazers (2004-05), and Sacramento Kings (2005-08) and finished the 2000 Olympics with 51 points and 26 rebounds.
