On this day in 2001 a young 18 year old Recruit Sailor sat in the Legal Department at Naval Recruit Command, Great Lakes Chicago, regretting his decision to join the armed forces. He only had one more signature to be signed on his discharge paperwork and he would be home with his family and friends never to look back on his decision. A young Legal secretary came from the back office and looked at the young man in horror telling him he must make his way back to his ship immediately. The adolescent swearing under his breath marched his way back to his ship saluting every officer who passed only to be stopped to recite his core values in which he knew by heart from the constant drilling of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. Upon arriving at his ship he was greeted by his fellow shipmates in a mass confusion as his Recruit Division Commanders explained that the Twin Towers in New York City had been bombed in a terrorist attack. The young man looked down at his Legal paperwork tore it to pieces and remembered that when he raised his right hand he COMMITTED himself protect his country. He also knew in his heart that he must be COURAGEOUS and fight like his fathers before him. And with HONOR expedite every order given to him by his superiors to the best of his ability because America is the land of the free and the home of the brave. That 18 year old boy was me. I will never regret making the decision that day and although I now live half a world away America will always be my home and I would do it over again because I know its right. God Bless America and never forget 9/11.
