On this day in History in 534 a second and final revision of the Codex Justinianus was published. In 1272 while traveling during the Ninth Crusade, Prince Edward became King of England upon Henry III of Englands death, but he would not return to England for nearly two years to assume the throne. In 1532 Francisco Pizarro and his men captured Inca Emperor Atahualpa at the Battle of Cajamarca. In 1776 British and Hessian units captured Fort Washington from the Patriots. In 1822 Missouri trader William Becknell arrived in Santa Fe, New Mexico over a route that became known as the Santa Fe Trail. In 1849 a Russian court sentenced writer Fyodor Dostoevsky to death for anti-government activities linked to a radical intellectual group; his sentence was later changed to hard labor. In 1863 the Battle of Campbells Station was fought near Knoxville, Tennessee when Confederate troops unsuccessfully attacked Union forces. In 1940 in response to the leveling of Coventry by the German Luftwaffe two days before, the Royal Air Force bombed Hamburg.
