On this day in Saints history-December 10th #1939—The first-ever African-American professional football game played in New Orleans involving an out of region opponent is held at Pelican Stadium where the New Orleans Pirates play the Chicago Brown Bombers in a 34-19 loss. Tickets were 95 cents each. In a reflection of the times, the team’s press release states, “A large section of stands will be reserved for white spectators.” About 1000 people attend the contest. N.O. most recognized Negro independent football league teams of the 1920s-early 50s included the Scrubs, Brutes, Trojans, Elks, Hawks, Pirates, and South Siders & occasionally played against other teams based in Baton Rouge & Bogalusa. 1967—Saints lose at the Baltimore Colts 30-10. Only Saints TD was a 6-yard run by RB Charlie Brown, RB Randy Schultz has 121 combined yards, WR Walter “Flea” Roberts has 134 return yards. Colts Lou Michaels makes three fieldgoals, Colts TDs by RBs Tony Lorick, Tom Matte, & Jerry Hill, David Lee averages 47.0 yards per punt. Colts defense has three sacks, Saints two. Saints offense has four turnovers. 1971—General manager Vic Schwenk is relieved of his duties with two games left in the season. 1972—Saints lose in Tulane Stadium to New England 17-10. Saints defense has three sacks, Patriots two. Patriots WR Reggie Rucker has two TD catches. Patriots offense has two turnovers, Saints four. Saints QB Archie Manning had 24 completions (52 attempts), WR Danny Abramowicz has Saints only TD. Saints LB Tom Roussel & safety Hugo Hollas has 6 tackles each. 1978—Saints lose their last home game of the season 17-12 to the Houston Oilers. Saints WR Tinker Owens catches team’s only TD pass (6 yards). Oilers score on an 80-yard TD reception (QB Dan Pastorini to WR Robert Woods), RB Earl Campbell has Oilers other TD. Saints score a safety in the 4th quarter when Campbell runs out of the endzone. 1989—Saints win at Buffalo 22-19, Saints Morten Andersen (3 FGs) kicks winning 22-yard fielgoal with 1:53 to go, safety Brett Maxie has key INT with under a minute to go to seal victory, LB Pat Swilling also has an INT which leads to Saints first TD—a QB John Fourcade to TE John Tice 12-yard catch, a NT Jumpy Geathers fumble recovery leads to a RB Dalton Hilliard 54-yard TD catch (has 152 combined yards), WR Eric Martin has 100 yards. Bills recovered a Saints fumble on the 2nd half opening kickoff at the Saints 2-yard line that led to a TE Pete Metzelaars TD, WR James Lofton also has a Bills TD. Saints had 436 yards total offense, Bills 279. Bills defense has three sacks. 1995—Saints lose at Atlanta 19-14. Down by two points, last-minute Saints drive at Falcons five-yard line was stopped by a Falcons LB Jessie Tuggle INT returned for 49 yards. Ex-Saint Morten Andersen makes four fieldgoals (longest 55 yards) plus RB Craig Heyward (135 combined yards) scores the other Falcons points. TE Irv Smith catches both Saints TDs. 2000—Saints win at San Francisco 31-27 in comeback mode. Saints set then club record going 7-1 on the road & is an NFL record for greatest turnaround on the road in one season after going 0-8 in 1999. In a crazy fourth quarter, Saints RB Terry Allen scores on a one-yard TD run with 46 seconds left, safety Darren Perry (2 INTs) would seal the game with ten seconds left on an INT. The play prior to Allen’s TD, Saints FB Terrelle Smith fumbled near the goalline and center Jerry Fontenot recovered it to keep the drive going, WR Joe Horn has 105 yards. Saints DE Darren Howard has a sack breaking Renaldo Turnbull’s rookie sack record (finishes year with 11). Aaron Brooks became first Saints QB to rush for over 100 yards in a game (108), Brooks has 2 TD passes (TE Andrew Glover & WR Willie Jackson), Doug Brien has three fieldgoals. 49ers defense has five sacks (DT Bryant Young-2.5), Saints two. 49ers offense has 3 turnovers. 49ers QB Jeff Garcia has 2 TD runs & 2 TD passes. 2006—Saints win at Dallas on Sunday Night (NBC) 42-17 where Sean Payton defeated his mentor Bill Parcells. Cowboys RB Julius Jones has 116 yards, WR Terry Glenn has 150 yards. Saints QB Drew Brees has 384 passing yards & 5 TD passes, FB Mike Karney has 2 TD catches & 1 TD run, RB Reggie Bush has 125 receiving yards & 1 TD catch (61 yards), RB Deuce McAllister has 111 yards, Steve Weatherford averages 47.8 yards per punt. DE Will Smith has 2 sacks, Saints defense has 2 INTs. Cowboys WR Miles Austin has 148 kick return yards. 2007—Saints win on Monday Night (ESPN) 34-14 at Atlanta. Game is noted for Falcons QB Michael Vick not playing due to indictment a few days earlier over dog-fighting. Saints QB Drew Brees has 328 passing yards & 3 TD passes (2-WR Marques Colston, 1-WR David Patten-122 yards), safety Roman Harper has a 31-yard INT return for a TD, RB Aaron Stecker has 100 yards. Saints defense has 3 sacks. Falcons QB Chris Redman has 2 TD passes, Michael Koenen averages 47.0 yards per punt. 2013—Saints RB Pierre Thomas is voted by his teammates as their “Walter Payton Man of the Year” for loyalty to the squad & the community and is automatically a finalized for the national award.
