On this day in Saints history-December 19th 1968—Three Saints assistants resign: Def. coord. Jack Faulkner, Off. Coord. George Dickson, and receivers coach Bob Shaw. Faulkner would return to the Saints on January 21st after he & head coach Tom Fears worked out past disagreements which some felt had to do with jealousy over Faulkner’s TV coaches show on WDSU getting better ratings that Fears’ show on WWL-TV. Dickson would move on to the Washington Redskins. 1971—Saints lose to Falcons 24-20 at Tulane Stadium to finish the season 4-8-2, Falcons take the lead for good on a 22-yard TD pass from QB Bob Berry to WR Ken Burrow (190 yards) with 40 seconds left, RB Art Malone has 2 TDs. Falcons defense has five sacks. Saints TDs by RB Bob Gresham (112 combined yards) & QB Archie Manning (run). At season’s end, guard Jake Kupp is named team MVP by the N.O. Touchdown Club. 1971—The fifth annual Saints & Sinners Grid Club awards banquet is held with QB Edd Hargett being named MVP, other awards went to TE Dave Parks (offense) & DE Richard Neal (defense). Since club members couldn’t come to agreement on a single rookie of the year, it named 14 of the club’s rookies along with J.D. Roberts (in his first full year as Saints head coach) as Rookies of the Year. 1982—RB George Rogers sets then team single-game rushing record vs Dallas with 166 yards (also had a TD), Saints lose 21-7. Saints Toni Fritsch missed a fieldgoal & had one blocked, when team plane arrived back in New Orleans afterwards he packed his bags and drove back to Houston and never told Saints he was quitting. Saints offense had four turnovers, Dallas five. Cowboys RB Tony Dorsett has 2 TDs & 105 yards, DE Harvey Martin has 2 sacks. 1994—Saints lose on Monday Night (ABC) 24-16 to Dallas. Saints DE Joe Johnson blocks a fieldgoal attempt, safety Sean Lumpkin has 12 tackles, Morten Andersen makes three fieldgoals, RB Derek Brown has Saints only TD. Dallas defense scores 2 TDs on INT runbacks (DE Tony Tolbert & LB Darrin Smith), WR Kevin Williams has 101 kick return yards. 1999—Saints lose at Baltimore 31-8. Saints RB Ricky Williams did not play and was allowed by coach Mike Ditka to sleep in the locker room during the first half. Saints DT La’Roi Glover has 11 tackles (all solo) & 3 sacks (team has 5). Saints only score was a 20-yard TD pass from QB Billy Joe Tolliver to WR Keith Poole (2 point conversion pass to TE Cam Cleeland), RB Dino Philyaw has 111 kick return yards, Tommy Barnhardt punts 11 times. Saints offense held to eight first downs & 11 rushing yards. Each team has four INTs. Ravens safety Corey Harris has a 24 yard INT return for a TD, WR Qadry Ismail had 115 yards, QB Tony Banks has 3 TD passes. 2004—Saints win at Tampa Bay 21-17, winning 7-yard TD pass from QB Aaron Brooks to WR Donte Stallworth with 32 seconds left. Saints RB Aaron Stecker runs back opening kickoff 98 yards for a TD and named NFC special teams player of the week, DE Charles Grant has 10 tackles & a fumble recovery, DE Darren Howard has nine tackles, a sack, and a fumble recovery. WR Joe Horn had the Saints other TD. Saints WR Michael Lewis has a 53-yard punt return to set up a score. Bucs RB Michael Pittman has 131 yards, WR Joey Galloway has 2 TD catches. Bucs defense has seven sacks, Saints one. Bucs offense had four turnovers. 2009—Saints lose their first regular season game of the year, 24-17 to Dallas in the Superdome (NFL Net. On Sat.). Dallas led 24-3 thru 3 quarters, Saints score two fourth quarter TDs, had last chance after Dallas Nick Folk misses a 24 yard FG with 2:11 to go, but Saints QB Brees fumbles with :12 to go near midfield. Dallas out did Saints 439 yards to 336. Cowboys WR Miles Austin has 139 yards & a TD catch. Cowboys defense has four sacks, an INT, and two fumble recoveries. QB Drew Brees sets Saints franchise career record by throwing his 121st TD pass. Saints LB Jonathan Vilma has 14 tackles, LB Scott Fujita & safety Darren Sharper each have 10, DE Will Smith has 2 sacks (team has 3), Thomas Morstead average 50.3 yards per punt. 2010—Saints lose at Baltimore 30-24. Ravens Billy Cundiff (3 FGs) kicks winning 32-yard FG with 10:08 to play, 3:00 to go Ravens punt to Saints four-yard line & Ravens defense holds Saints at bay. Ravens defense has 3 sacks, an INT, and 2 forced fumbles, RB Ray Rice has 2 TD runs & 233 combined yards. Ravens penalized 10 times for 68 yards. Saints TE Jimmy Graham has 2 TD catches, WR Lance Moore has the other, RB Pierre Thomas has 111 kick return yards. LB Jonathan Vilma has 11 tackles, Saints defense has 3 sacks.
