On this day in Saints history-December 21st 1969—Saints defeat Steelers in Tulane Stadium 27-24 with winning 3-yard TD scored by RB Andy Livingston with 55 seconds left, Saints TE Ray Poage has 2 TDs, Olie Cordill averages 48.0 yards per punt. Steelers DB Charles Beatty tried to get Saints WR Danny Abramowicz (129 yards) kicked out of the game in a fight hoping Steelers WR Roy Jefferson would win the NFL receiving title but (no) Danny got the title with season totals of 1015 yards on 73 catches and 7 TDs. This game also marked the last for DE Doug Atkins who retired after 17 years, he sacked the quarterback on his last play. Saints earned 23 first downs but had 127 penalty yards. Steelers RB Earl Gros (from Schriever, LA) had 3 TDs, Steelers defense has five sacks. 1972—Dallas Morning News reports that Saints spokesman Harry Hulmes denies reports the Saints have talked with University of Alabama head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant about taking over the “hapless” pro club. 1975—Saints lose at home to Chicago 42-17 to finish the season 2-12. Rams slowly come back and get a 4th quarter 15-yard TD pass from QB Jamie Martin to WR Eddie Kennison to take the lead for good. Rams Sean Landetta averages 49.7 yards per punt. 1997—Saints lose at Kansas City 25-13 to finish the season 6-10. Saints LB Mark Fields has two sacks (team has 3) plus another six tackles, WR Keith Poole has two TD catches, WR Eric Guliford has 157 return yards. Chiefs QBs held to 20 passing yards. Saints offense has five turnovers (3 INTs, 2 fumbles). Chiefs had 10 penalties for 81 yards. Chiefs TDs by RB Marcus Allen, TE Ted Popson, & WR Tamarick Vanover on an 82-yard punt return (173 return yards). 2003—Saints lose at Jacksonville 20-19 despite an incredible last second play later called the “River City Relay” where Saints QB Aaron Brooks throws to WR Donte Stallworth followed by laterals between WR Michael Lewis, RB Deuce McAllister, and WR Jerome Pathon for a TD, John Carney would miss the extra point that followed. It should be noted that the Saints were already eliminated from the playoff race prior to this play when Dallas won their contest earlier. McAllister has 113 combined yards, Saints CB Fakhir Brown has a blocked fieldgoal, TE Boo Williams had a TD catch. Jaguars RB Fred Taylor has 194 yards, Jaguars threw two INTs. 2008—Saints win at Detroit 42-7, the Lions were on their way to a 0-16 season.
