On this day in Saints history-December 24th 1989—The Saints beat the Colts in the Superdome 41-6 to finish the year 9-7. The final three wins in a row with QB John Fourcade at the helm would lead the Saints to use this later against QB Bobby Hebert at contract time & created a long squabble that would last the entire 1990 season. Game doesn’t sell out due to hazardous conditions from snow fall. Saints reach the 6000-point mark in their regular season history on a 30 yard TD pass from Fourcade to TE Hoby Brenner. Saints CB Toi Cook runs back an INT 63 yards for a TD, CB Robert Massey took a lateral from FB Bobby Morse on a punt in the second half and ran it 54 yards to set up a RB Dalton Hilliard seven-yard TD run, this tied a then team record with his 13th rushing TD in one season. Colts defense has three sacks, Colts RB Albert Bentley has 110 kick return yards. 1994—Saints beat Denver 30-28 at Mile High Stadium to finish the season 7-9, WR Torrance Small has 200 yards (second most in Saints history at said time) & 2 TDs in the contest, NFL Films named this the Edge performance of the Week. Saints DE Wayne Martin has two sacks (team has four), Morten Andersen had three fieldgoals. Denver turned the ball over four times, Broncos RB Derrick Clark has 2 TDs, TE Shannon Sharpe one TD, RB-WR Glyn Milburn has 135 return yards, their defense has five sacks. 1995—Saints defeat the Jets at the Meadowlands 12-0 to finish the season 7-9. Saints DE Joe Johnson has 10 tackles and two sacks, WR Torrance Small blocks a punt, Doug Brien kicks two fieldgoals, QB Jim Everett throws only TD to TE Wesley Walls. Jets offense threw three INTs and were sacked four times. This is the last of nine straight years the Saints win their last game of the season. It is also the Saints 12th ever victorious shutout. 1999—Saints win in the Superdome over Dallas 31-24 (Friday) in QB Jake Delhomme’s first ever NFL regular season start (278 passing yards, 2 TD passes to WRs Keith Poole & Eddie Kennison plus a rushing TD & an INT). Saints CB Fred Weary (10 tackles & an INT) runs back a fumble recovery 58 yards for a TD (forced by DT Robert Newkirk) with ten minutes left to give Saints lead. Dallas WR Jason Tucker has 128 yards & a TD, Aikman has 2 TD passes, RB Emmitt Smith as a TD run. 2000—Saints lose to the Rams at home 26-21 to finish the season 10-6, they will have a home playoff game the following weekend vs the Rams. Saints WRs Joe Horn & Willie Jackson each have a TD catch, LB Darrin Smith has a 41-yard INT return for a TD, RB Fred McAfee has 138 kick return yards. Rams RB Marshall Faulk has 220 yards and 3 TDs, WR Torry Holt has 121 yards. Rams offense out did Saints 474-269. Rams defense has two sacks, Saints three. Saints set a club season record with 66 sacks where DT La’Roi Glover has 17 sacks on the year while DE Darren Howard sets a club rookie record with 11. Saints WR Joe Horn has 94 receptions & 1340 yards receiving for the season. 2005—Saints lose their final game in the Alamodome (San Antonio) 13-12 to Detroit on the last play of the game on a Lions 39-yard Jason Hanson fieldgoal, Saints took the lead with 1:52 left 12-10 before Lions drove from their own 19-yard line. After the game Saints guard Kendyl Jacox tells the press that it was nice playing in San Antonio because fans “didn’t boo” here. Saints reach the 11,000-point mark in their regular season history on a 47-yard fieldgoal by John Carney in the 3rd quarter (has 4 FGs), CB Fred Thomas has an INT. Lions DE Shaun Rogers has a 21-yard fumble return for a TD, WR Roy Williams has 111 yards, DE James Hall has two forced fumbles, WR Eddie Drummond has 150 kick return yards. Lions penalized 11 times for 65 yards. 2006—Saints win at the New York Giants 30-7. For only the third time in Saints history, they had two 100-yard rushers in the same contest (RB Reggie Bush 126-1 TD, RB Deuce McAllister 108-1 TD). Saints WR Marques Colston has a TD catch, kicker John Carney has 3 FGs. Saints defense has 2 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries, and an INT. Saints out did Giants in total yardage 359-142, Saints kept the ball 40:34, Saints defense held Giants to only six first downs. Giants WR Sinorice Moss has 116 kick return yards.
