On this day in Saints history-November 21st 1971—Saints lose at home to the Vikings 23-10. Saints defense gets four sacks (DEs Joe Owens & Richard Neal, LBs Wayne Colman & Jim Flanigan). Flanigan also has 9 tackles, TE Dave Parks has Saints only TD. Vikings Fred Cox has 3 fieldgoals, QB Bob Lee & RB Clint Jones have TD runs, CB Charlie West has 2 INTs. 1972—Vicksburg, MS multi-millionaire F.L. Cappaert tells the Associated Press that he would like to buy the Saints from owner John Mecom Jr. although Mecom denies ever speaking to Cappaert. Cappaert goes as far to state that if he became owner he would like to hire his long-time friend & University of Nebraska head coach Bob Devaney as Saints head coach. 1976—Saints defeated expansion Seahawks 51-27 in the Kingdome (then club record for most points in a game). This was only year Seattle was in the NFC West with the Saints. Saints DT Elex Price caught a tipped pass and ran 23 yards for a TD. Saints safety Tom Myers ran back a fumble 20 yards for a TD. Saints offense has two turnovers, Seattle has five. Saints QB Bobby Douglass has 2 TD runs, RBs Chuck Muncie & Tony Galbreath also have TDs. Seattle WR Steve Largent has 101 yards & a TD, safety Lyle Blackwood has 110 return yards. 1979—Saints CB Maurice Spencer is released on injured reserve settlement, he is immediately picked up by Atlanta. 1982—In the first game since NFL strike ended, Saints defeat the Chiefs 27-14 in the Superdome. Saints safety Bill Hurley has an INT that sets up a score, WR Guido Merkens throws his only TD pass of the season out of fake fieldgoal formation to RB Wayne Wilson (also has a 75-yard kickoff return). Saints Morten Andersen missed the tying fieldgoal on the last play of the game, FB Hokie Gajan has his first 100-yard rushing day (113), RB George Rogers has 2 TDs, safety Russell Gary has INT on first Jets pass to set up score. Saints LB Rickey Jackson has two sacks, CB Dave Waymer has 8 tackles. Saints offense has 401 yards. Saints had an 11-point lead that the Jets ate into with two TDs in the fourth quarter including a safety Kirk Springs 76-yard punt return TD (151 return yards). Jets LB Lance Mehl has a 34-yard interception return for a TD & 13 tackles, WR Wesley Walker has 110 yards. 1999—Saints lose on Sunday Night (ESPN) at Jacksonville 41-23. Saints DE Willie Whitehead has two sacks, RB Ricky Williams scores his first two NFL rushing TDs (119 combined yards), QB Billy Joe Tolliver has a TD run, WR Dino Philyaw has 113 return yards. Jaguars return man Reggie Barlow (148 return yards) has a 74 yard punt return TD. Jaguars offense out did Saints 494 to 339. Jaguars WR Jimmy Smith has 220 yards and a TD, QB Mark Brunell has 351 yards & 2 TD passes. Going into game, Jaguars defense didn’t allow a TD run that season. 2003—Tight end Ernie Conwell goes on injured reserve with a fractured right ankle. 2004—Saints lose at home to the Broncos 34-13. Owner Tom Benson is upset after the game & tells the media that his team “played like a bunch of high school kids” and it was “the worst game in his 20 years since I’ve owned them.” Saints LB Colby Bockwoldt has 11 tackles, QB Aaron Brooks breaks a then team record for passing attempts (60) and completions (34) in a game & ties a then Saints record with 377 passing yards, WR Donte Stallworth has 122 yards & a TD, WR Michael Lewis has 166 return yards. Broncos LB Al Wilson runs back an INT 7 yards for a TD. Broncos RB Rueben Droughns has 166 yards & a TD, QB Jake Plummer has 2 TD passes. Saints offense had three INTs and one lost fumble. Saints penalized 10 times for 79 yards. 2010—Saints win over the Seahawks 34-19. Saints reach the 13,000-point mark in their regular season history on a 3-yard TD pass from QB Drew Brees to WR Robert Meachem in the 2nd quarter. Brees has 4 TD passes & 382 yards (2 each to WRs Robert Meachem & Marques Colston-113 yards), RB Chris Ivory has a TD run, LB Scott Shanle has 12 tackles, Saints defense has 2 fumble recoveries. Seattle defense has 2 INTs, Seattle WR Mike Williams has 109 yards, Olindo Mare has four FGs, QB Matt Hasslebeck has 366 yards & a TD pass. 2013—Saints win at Atlanta 17-13 on Thursday night (NFL Network). Saints QB Drew Brees moves into 5th place in NFL history for passing yards (49,566 at game’s end) & has 2 TD passes (TEs Jimmy Graham-100 yards, Ben Watson). Saints RB Pierre Thomas has 73 yards (7.3 per carry), CB Corey White has a fumble recovery (forced by DE Keyunta Dawson), Garrett Hartley makes a 41-yard fieldgoal. Saints defense has 5 sacks (DE Cameron Jordan-2.5). Falcons RB Steven Jackson has a TD, Matt Bryant makes 2 FGs but misses third attempt (after first try was good but Saints called time out before snap) with 2:24 to go, allowing Saints to use up most of the clock.
